Aconcagua The highest peak in the Andes and the Western Hemisphere, located in Argentina.
Chimborazo An Ecuadorian volcano that is the farthest point on Earth's surface from its center.
Altiplano A high-altitude plateau in the central Andes, home to Lake Titicaca and Salar de Uyuni.
Salar de Uyuni The world's largest salt flat, located in Bolivia and containing massive lithium deposits.
Nazca Plate The tectonic plate whose subduction beneath the South American Plate created the Andes.
Andean Condor The largest flying bird of prey in the world, a namesake scavenger of the mountain range.
Cock-of-the-rock A bright orange bird native to Andean cloud forests and the national bird of Peru.
Lake Titicaca The highest navigable lake in the world, straddling the border between Peru and Bolivia.
Ojos del Salado The highest active volcano on Earth, situated on the border of Chile and Argentina.
Tierra del Fuego The archipelago at the southern tip of South America where the Andes Mountains terminate.
Zonda Winds Dry, warm winds that descend the eastern slopes of the Andes in Argentina.
Yungas A bioregion of forest and cloud forest on the eastern slopes of the Andes.
Inca Empire The ancient civilization centered in the Andes that utilized terrace farming and freeze-dried potatoes.
Potosí A city in Bolivia famous for its massive colonial-era silver mines in the Cerro Rico mountain.
Atacama Desert The driest non-polar desert on Earth, created by the rain shadow of the Andes Mountains.
