Ides of March The date (March 15, 44 BCE) on which Julius Caesar was assassinated in the Theatre of Pompey.
Battle of Alesia The 52 BCE battle where Caesar defeated Vercingetorix by building a wall around the city and a second wall to block reinforcements.
Rubicon The river Caesar crossed in 49 BCE, committing treason and starting a civil war while declaring "the die is cast."
First Triumvirate The political alliance between Julius Caesar, Pompey the Great, and Marcus Licinius Crassus.
Pontifex Maximus The title of High Priest of Rome, which Caesar held from 63 BCE until his death.
Marcus Junius Brutus The senator and close friend of Caesar who became a lead conspirator in his assassination.
Veni, Vidi, Vici The Latin phrase meaning "I came, I saw, I conquered," sent as a message after the Battle of Zela.
Caligula The Roman Emperor whose name means "little boots" and who famously tried to make his horse, Incitatus, a consul.
Mark Antony Caesar's general and co-consul who formed the Second Triumvirate and later committed suicide with Cleopatra.
Gallic Wars The series of military campaigns (58–50 BCE) in modern-day France that Caesar described in his famous "Commentaries."
Augustus Born Octavian, he was the adopted son of Caesar who became the first Roman Emperor after defeating Antony and Cleopatra.
Res Gestae The funerary inscription detailing the life and accomplishments of Augustus, often cited in quiz bowl clues.
Calpurnia The last wife of Julius Caesar who reportedly dreamt of his murder the night before it occurred.
Pharsalus The decisive battle in Caesar's Civil War where he defeated the forces of his former ally, Pompey the Great.
Incitatus The favored horse of the emperor Caligula, which the emperor allegedly intended to name as a Roman consul.
