Chapter 1

Homeostasis

TermDefinition
Sensor Detecting the change (Stimulus) (as related to Feedback Loops)
Integrator/Control Center Determines what to do about the change (as related to Feedback loops)
Effector Brings variable back to set point (as related to feedback loops)
Feedback Stimulatory or inhibitory (as related to Feedback loops)
Latency How fast a feedback loop responds
Gain How strongly the feedback is corrected
Positive Feedback Loop i.e. Childbirth and Blood Clotting are accelerated changes to the intial change that activated the system.
Negative Feedback Loop i.e.
Matter Has Mass and takes up space (Chemistry)
Elements Building blocks of Matter (Chemistry)
Atom Units of Elements (smallest unit in the element) (Chemistry)
Proton Positively charged part of the atom and its nucleus (Chemistry)
Neutron NO charge and in the nucleus (Chemistry)
Electron Negatively charged part of the atom, that is ORBITING around the nucleus (Chemistry)
Ion A charged particle (Chemistry)
Anion Negatively charged particle (Chemistry)
Cation Positively charged particle (Chemistry)
Molecule Smallest group/Unit of Atoms bonded together. Can be the same or different elements. (Chemistry)
Compound Specific atoms bonded together in a fixed ratio.
Organic Compound Contains Carbon as the base. Vital for living organisms to properly function. Lots of Carbon-Hydrogen Bonds (i.e. Carbohydrates, Proteins, Amino Acids, Lipids, Triglyceride, Nuclear Acids, DNA (C,H,O,N,P)
Inorganic Compound Does not contain Carbon as the base. (i.e. Acids~HCL, Bases~NaOH, Salt~NaCL, Oxides~Fe203 (Chemistry)
Ionic Bond Transfer of electrons, formation of ions (Chemistry)
Covalent Bond Sharing of electrons, causing stable molecules (i.e. water, glucose, proteins. (Chemistry)
Polar Covalent Bond Subtype ~ unequal sharing of electrons. creates partial charges between atoms (Chemistry)
Non-polar Covalent Bond Subtype ~ equal sharing of electrons. no charge overall (Chemistry)
Anabolic Building more complex molecules. (Chemistry)
Catabolic Breaking complex molecules into more simpler ones (Chemistry)
Catalysts Assist reactions (typically an enzyme (Chemistry)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
