Urinary System

What is the function of the ureters? Transports urine
What is the function of the nephrons? smallest unit of kidney; helps filter wastes from blood
What is the function of the skin, urinary system liver, & lungs? remove waste & toxins from body
What is the glomerulus? a cluster capillaries within the nephron acting as the primary filtration unit
Erythropoietin is released by the kidney for.... the production of additional RBCs
Urinary system controls: body fluids; pH; electrolytes; homeostasis
What is micturition? the act of urination
What is the first stage of nephron function? filtration of blood (removal of water)
What is the second stage of nephron function? resorption/reabsorption of amino acids, water, ions back into the blood
What is the last stage of nephron function? secretion of harmful ions from blood into urine
Review page 13 of your notes (flow of blood into and out of kidney) 1: Blood flows from heart through the inferior vena cava; 2: blood enters through the renal artery; 3:kidney filters blood; 4: urine leaves through ureter; 5: urine collects into bladder; 6: urine leaves through the urethra
