Elements and Principles of Design Terms

What are the elements of design? Space, Line, Shape, Form, Texture, Color
What are the principals of design? Balance, Rhythm, Proportion/Scale, Emphasis, Unity
What is the principal repitition? Design is copied or repeated
How does texture affect color? Smooth surfaces reflect more light, Rough surfaces absorb more light
What do curved lines suggest? Soft, Graceful affect
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? Horizontal is left and right are equal. Vertical is top and bottom are equal. Radial is elements radiating out from the center of the design
What do diagonal lines suggest? Action, movement and excitement
What is space? An area provided for a particular purpose
What are the four types of rhythm? Gradation, Radial Lines, Repetition, Continous Lines
What is asymmetrical balance? Equal in visual weight but not identical
What is the difference between vertical and horizontal lines? Horizontal is side to side. Vertical is up and down.
What is the golden mean? 3:5 ratio
What is the difference between shape and form? Shape is 2 dimensional. Form is 3 dimensional.
What are the 5 types of balance? Asymmetrical, Symmetrical, Radial, Vertical and Horizontal
What does unity or harmony mean? All of the elements and principals of design work together in the room
What are the two things texture involves? How the surface feels to the touch and how it appears to feel
What are the four types of line? Vertical, Horizontal, Diagonal and Curved
What is proportion? How the design is visually divided
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? Asymmetrical
What is symmetrical balance? Example? When both parts are identical. Plants.
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? One object or item stands out. Focal Point.
What happens when you use a continuous line? It creates a continous line for the eye to follow
What is another name for symmetrical balance? Formal Balance
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? Informal Balance
What is the difference between gradation and radiation? Gradation is design increasing or decreasing in size and one element of design changing. Radiation is a line or design moving out from a center point.
