QuestionAnswer
What does vascular mean in cardiovascular? It refers to the closed system of blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to the body and back to the heart
What are capillaries? Blood vessels that are only big enough to allow individual red blood cells to enter and exit that have thin walls where exchange between the blood and individual cells happen.
What do cells and blood exchange in capillaries? Cells give carbon dioxide while blood gives them oxygen and nutrients.
What's the outermost layer of blood vessels? Tunica externa
What's the middle layer of blood vessels? Tunica media
What's the innermost layer of blood vessels? Tunica intima
How many cells thick are capillaries? Just 1 cell
Are arteries or veins thick and elastic? Arteries
Are arteries or veins thin and less elastic? Veins
Which have valves? Arteries or veins? Veins
Why do veins have valves? Because gravity would prevent blood flow
Why don't arteries need valves? Because the force from the left ventricle is so strong that gravity isn't strong enough to have a major negative impact on blood flow
