TermDefinition
ALA Latin for “wing,” referring to the sides of the nostrils of the nose. The plural term for both nostrils is alae.
ACCESSIONAL Permanent teeth that do not replace deciduous teeth, but rather become an accession (addition) to the deciduous teeth.
APEX The root end of any tooth. End point, or furthest tip, as of the tooth root.
BICUSPIDS Two teeth next to the cuspids.
BITEWING A cavity-detecting radiograph showing interproximal surfaces between the teeth. Two or four bitewing radiographs are often taken at recall appointments.
CALCULUS plaque on the surface of the teeth. Also called tartar.
CROSS BITE Condition in which the cusps of a tooth in one arch exceed the cusps of a tooth in the opposing arch, buccally, or lingually.
FISSURE Deep cleft, developmental line fault usually found in the occlusal or buccal surface of a tooth, commonly the result of imperfect fusion of the enamel of the adjoining dental lobes.
GINGIVIA The fibrous tissue covered by mucous membrane that immediately surrounds the teeth, also called the gums.
INCISORS A cutting tooth. One of the four anterior teeth of either jaw. Central incisors are the centre front teeth, and lateral incisors are on either side of the centrals.
MALOCCLUSON An improper occlusion (bite). Any deviation from a physiologically acceptable contact of opposing dentitions.
MANDIBLE lower jaw
MESAIL Facing toward the midline of the body or toward the centre of the dental arch. The tooth surface that faces the midline is the mesial surface.
PONTIC The structure that replaces the missing tooth of a bridge and is attached to the abutment. Replaces the missing natural tooth. Pontic means false.
TORUS A bulging projection of bone.
