| Near field communication (NFC) | a very short-range wireless connectivity technology |
| Bluetooth | a wireless communications specification that describes how cell phones, computers, personal digital assistants, etc., can be interconnected |
| Wi-Fi | wireless telecommunications technology that employs a wireless access point that receives the signal and decodes it (transmits signal into a radio signal and sends it to the device's wireless adapter |
| "Hot spot" | an area covered by one or more interconnected wireless access points |
| Microwave transmission qualities | Line-of-sight, relay stations, 30 miles apart, high capacity, elevated locations |
| Modem | translates digital data into an analog signal for transmission over telephone lines |
| Fax modem | combines data from multiple signals to send/receive faxes via the network |
| Multiplexer | allows several communications signals to be transmitted over a single communications medium at the same time, thus saving expensive long-distance communications costs |
| Gateway | serves as an entrance to another network, such as the internet |
| Router | Forwards data packets across two or more distinctive networks towards their destinations through a process known as routing |
| Bridge | connects two LANs where both use the same communications protocol |
| Switch | uses the physical device address in each incoming message on the network to determine which output port it should forward the message to reach another device on the same network |
| Front-end processor | manages communications to and from a computer system serving many people |
| PBX (private branch exchange) | manages both voice and data transfer within a building and to outside lines |
| Network operating system (NOS) | systems software that controls the computer systems and devices on a network |
| Network-management software | Protects software from being copied, modified, or downloaded illegally, locates telecommunications errors and potential network problems |
| Mobile device management software (MDM) | manages and troubleshoots mobile devices remotely, pushing out applications, data, patches and settings |
| Central control group | maintains group policies for security, control system settings ensure malware protection is in place for mobile devices used across the network |
| Software-defined networking (SDN) | an emerging approach to networking that allows administrators to have programmable central control of the network via controller without requiring physical access to all network devices |
| Backbone of the internet | the cables, routers, switching stations, communications towers, and satellites, network service providers - fiber optic cables, that span the globe |
| IP protocol | the set of rules used to pass packets from one host to another |
| Transmission control protocol (TCP) | the widely used transport layer protocol that most internet applications use with IP |
| IP address | a 64-bit number that identifies a computer on the internet (DNS/Domain name system is an alternative to numbers) |
| Uniform resource locator (URL) | a web address that specifies the exact location of a web page using letters and words that map to an IP address and host location |
| Internet Corporation for assigned names and numbers (ICANN) | responsible for managing IP addresses and Internet domain names |
| Connecting via LAN server | connection method for businesses and organizations that manage a local area network |
| Internet service provider (ISP) | any organization that provides internet access to people (must have an account plus software and devices) |
| Dial-up internet | Internet connection that uses modem and standard phone line |
| Cable modem connections | Internet connection that uses coaxial cable for broadband internet |
| DSL connections | Internet connection that uses telephone lines for faster speeds than dial up |
| Wireless connection | Internet service over cellular and wi-fi networks |
| The Internet | the infrastructure on which the Web exists, made up of computers, network hardware such as routers and fiber-optic cables, software, and TCP/IP protocols |
