Understand operating system versioning and update awareness OS versioning labels updates so you know which version is installed. Update awareness lets the system install needed updates to keep your computer secure, working well, and compatible with new software.
Compare concepts surrounding applications vs. operating system vs. global settings Applications let you do tasks like browse the web or play games. The operating system runs the computer and supports apps. Global settings sit above everything, setting rules that apply to the OS and apps.
Understand operating systems and software settings Operating systems run computers, phones, and apps. Software settings let you customize your device to suit you.
Understand software preferences/settings Software settings let you customize how a program looks and works, and your changes are saved for next time.
Understand users and profiles A “User” logs in with a username and password. A “User Profile” stores your settings, wallpaper, preferences, and personal data.
Understand file structures and file/folder management, including image files Files can be stored in folders on Google Drive, your desktop, a disc, or any drive. This keeps them organized and easy to find, and you can search by file name.
Navigate menu options To navigate a menu, use the keyboard keys “Alt,” arrows, and “Enter,” or use a mouse and right-click to open the menu.
Troubleshoot software issues If your computer isn’t working right, restart it and check for updates. You can also close apps, scan for viruses, or search online for solutions.
Identify use of global positioning system (GPS) and geographic information system (GIS) in society GPS, like Google Maps, shows your location and helps you navigate. GIS uses maps to show information about a place, like storms, traffic, or nearby sites.
