QuestionAnswer
Identify types of devices (i.e. server, laptop, desktop, tablets, etc.) Desktop computers stay on a desk and are used at work, home, or school. Laptops are portable, battery-powered computers. Tablets are smaller, touch-screen devices. A server is a powerful computer that shares information over a network like the internet.
Identify impact of memory and storage for device usage If your computer is slow, your RAM may be too full. High RAM use causes lag and slow loading.
Connect and use different peripherals: camera, audio, microphone, USB devices, printer, external display and necessary device ports A desktop computer has ports to connect devices like printers, speakers, and webcams. These ports let you print, record, play games, and transfer files.
Identify Ethernet usage You can use the network card to connect via Ethernet, letting your computer access the internet and communicate on a network.
Connect a wireless device to a network (Wi-Fi) Choose an internet service provider and get a modem. A router lets multiple devices connect to the internet, usually wirelessly, creating a home network.
Understand power management and power settings Power management saves energy by reducing power use, like slowing the CPU or dimming the screen. Settings let you choose performance, save power, and put the computer to sleep when idle.
Understand driver concepts as well as their device compatibility and updates Device drivers are software that help the operating system communicate with hardware like printers or graphics cards. Missing or outdated drivers can cause devices to malfunction, so keeping them updated is important.
Compare platform implications and considerations (i.e. Mac, PC, Linux, iOS, Android, Firmware) MacOS comes on Macs and looks nice but is expensive. Windows comes on most PCs. Linux is free, open-source, and used on many servers. Mobile OSs like iOS and Android have fewer features than desktop OSs.
Compare platform compatibility for cellular, Wi-Fi, and wired Cellular needs the right hardware, drivers, and carrier. Wi-Fi works on most devices, supports 2.4–6 GHz, and comes in modules or adapters. Ethernet is reliable, fast (10 Mbps–10 Gbps), and can deliver power via RJ45 cables.
Understand concepts for connecting devices to the internet Devices use modems, routers, switches, and NICs to connect to the internet via wired methods like Ethernet or Fiber, or wireless like Wi-Fi and Cellular. Routers use NAT, firewalls, and gateways to protect home networks.
Understand common hardware configurations You can check and adjust hardware like the processor, memory, and devices using Windows tools or BIOS/UEFI. Update drivers, adjust power settings, and use software to test hardware for best performance.
Compare the pros and cons of touch screens vs non-touch screen devices Touchscreens are fun, flexible, and bright but can be harder to use. Non-touch devices are cheaper, last longer, and are easier to type on but can smudge and wear out faster.
