| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Anterior Pituitary | gland regulated by and connected to the hypothalamus; allows transport of hormones from the hypothalamus prior to entering the bloodstream |
| Epinephrine | hormone controlled by neural regulation which provides energy bursts during the fight or flight response |
| GHRH | growth hormone-releasing hormone which triggers the release of growth hormone from the anterior pituitary |
| Homeostasis | body’s ability to regulate its processes and remain balanced in its function |
| Hormonal Response | response involving the release of hormones in response to another hormone |
| Humoral Response | response involving the release of hormones in response to bodily fluid changes |
| Hypothalamus | region of the brain above the pituitary gland, responsible for hormone production and regulation |
| Negative Feedback | system which is used in the body to return to homeostasis; in the endocrine system it controls hormone release in the body |
| Neural Response | response involving the nervous system directly stimulating endocrine glands to release or inhibit hormone production |
| Norepinephrine | hormone which provides energy bursts during the fight or flight response |
| Oxytocin | hormone responsible for uterine contractions, and feelings of love and closeness; regulated by the hypothalamus and posterior pituitary gland |
| Posterior Pituitary | gland regulated by and connected to the hypothalamus which does not produce its own hormones, but stores and secretes hormones from the hypothalamus |
| TRH | thyrotropin-releasing hormone; released from the hypothalamus to trigger the release of thyroid-stimulating hormone from the anterior pituitary |
| TSH | thyroid stimulating hormone; stimulates the thyroid gland to release thyroid hormone |
