The terminology for the short and long vowel sounds of the 5 main English vowels

| Short A | Low front unrounded lax monothong short vowel |
| Long A | Mid to high, front unrounded tense diapthong long vowel |
| Short E | Mid-low front unrounded lax monothong short vowel |
| Long E | High front unrounded tense monothong long vowel |
| Short I | High-mid front unrounded lax monothong short vowel |
| Long I | Low to high, central to front unrounded tense diapthong long vowel |
| Short O | Low back rounded lax monothong short vowel |
| Long O | Mid to high, back round tense diapthong long vowel |
| Short U | High back rounded lax monothong short vowel |
| Long U | High-front to high-back, front to back, rounded, tense, diapthong-like long vowel Or: Voiced palatal glide approximant and high back rounded tense monothong vowel creating a diapthong-like sound |
