What is the primary function of the digestive system? Breakdown of food, absorption of nutrients, and elimination of waste.
Which enzyme begins protein digestion? pepsin
What is segmentation? Mixing contractions in the small intestine that help with digestion and absorption.
Which cells produce hydrochloric acid in the stomach? Parietal cells.
What is the function of HCl? Activates pepsin, kills bacteria, and creates an acidic environment for digestion.
Where does most nutrient absorption occur? small intestine
What is bile and what does it do? substance produced by the liver; emulsifies fats for absorption.
What is hydrolysis? Chemical breakdown of nutrients using water.
What is the role of the pancreas in digestion? Produces digestive enzymes and bicarbonate to neutralize stomach acid.
