What makes up the nervous system? the central and peripheral nervous system
What makes up the central nervous system (CNS)? the brain and spinal cord
What makes up the peripheral nervous system (PNS)? cranial and spinal nervous
What is the somatic nervous system? voluntary movements
What is the autonomic nervous system (ANS)? involuntary movements like cardiac rhythm and sleep/wake cycles
What makes up the brain? two cerebral hemispheres (left and right), the cerebellum, and the brain stem
What does the cerebellum do? helps with movement/balance, called little brain
What are the parts of the brain stem? the midbrain, pons, and medulla
How many cranial nerves are there? 12 total
What are the spinal nerves also called? nerve roots
What do the spinal nerves do? carry information from the spinal cord to the rest of the body, nerves exit from the vertebrae, consist of thoracic, cervical, lumbar, and sacral nerves
Where do the thoracic nerves send information to? the trunk and abdomen
Where do the cervical nerves send information to? neck, arms, and upper trunk
Where do the lumbar and sacral nerves send information to? legs, bladder, bowel, and sexual organs
What are motor neurons? efferent, carry information AWAY from the CNS to periphery
What are sensory neurons? afferent, carry information TOWARD the CNS or higher centers
What are connecting/internuncial neurons? neurons that connect nerves to where they need to be
How does trauma help us learn about the brain? we can observe someone's behaviors to see what happens to areas of their brain when they have a stroke
What is the earliest way we learned about the brain? through trauma
How does an autopsy help us learn about the brain? we observe what areas of the brain were damaged
How does electrical stimulation of brain help us learn about the brain? we observe how different areas of the brain respond to stimulation
What is the name of a PET scan? positron emission tomography
What does a PET scan do? identifies brain in a living person, has very high radiation so it can only be performed every so often (years)
What is the name of a CT? computerized tomography
What is the name of an MRI? magnetic resonance imaging
