AS&RM
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What makes up the nervous system? | the central and peripheral nervous system |
| What makes up the central nervous system (CNS)? | the brain and spinal cord |
| What makes up the peripheral nervous system (PNS)? | cranial and spinal nervous |
| What is the somatic nervous system? | voluntary movements |
| What is the autonomic nervous system (ANS)? | involuntary movements like cardiac rhythm and sleep/wake cycles |
| What makes up the brain? | two cerebral hemispheres (left and right), the cerebellum, and the brain stem |
| What does the cerebellum do? | helps with movement/balance, called little brain |
| What are the parts of the brain stem? | the midbrain, pons, and medulla |
| How many cranial nerves are there? | 12 total |
| What are the spinal nerves also called? | nerve roots |
| What do the spinal nerves do? | carry information from the spinal cord to the rest of the body, nerves exit from the vertebrae, consist of thoracic, cervical, lumbar, and sacral nerves |
| Where do the thoracic nerves send information to? | the trunk and abdomen |
| Where do the cervical nerves send information to? | neck, arms, and upper trunk |
| Where do the lumbar and sacral nerves send information to? | legs, bladder, bowel, and sexual organs |
| What are motor neurons? | efferent, carry information AWAY from the CNS to periphery |
| What are sensory neurons? | afferent, carry information TOWARD the CNS or higher centers |
| What are connecting/internuncial neurons? | neurons that connect nerves to where they need to be |
| How does trauma help us learn about the brain? | we can observe someone's behaviors to see what happens to areas of their brain when they have a stroke |
| What is the earliest way we learned about the brain? | through trauma |
| How does an autopsy help us learn about the brain? | we observe what areas of the brain were damaged |
| How does electrical stimulation of brain help us learn about the brain? | we observe how different areas of the brain respond to stimulation |
| What is the name of a PET scan? | positron emission tomography |
| What does a PET scan do? | identifies brain in a living person, has very high radiation so it can only be performed every so often (years) |
| What is the name of a CT? | computerized tomography |
| What is the name of an MRI? | magnetic resonance imaging |
