What are the parts of the lips? integument, mucous membrane, vermilion, philtrum, cupid's bow, and labial frenulum
What is the integument of the lips? the skin of the lips
What is the mucous membrane of the lips? the internal covering you can feel with your tongue inside the mouth
What is the vermilion of the lips? the colored part
What is the philtrum of the lips? the groove/ridges above the lip, consists of dimple, column, and tubercle
What is the philtral Dimple? the groove between the ridges below the nose and above the lip
What is the philtral column? the ridges below the nose and above the lip that help form the cupids bow
What is the philtral tubercle? extra padding on the lip that can be picked off if chapped or burnt
What is the cupids bow? the shape of the very top of thetopic lip
What is the white roll of the lip? the reflective area on the cupid's bow, cannot be recreated
What is the labial frenulum? the tissue that anchors the lips to gingiva (on the top lip and bottom)
What are the parts of the cheeks? integument, mucous membrane, duct of parotid salivary gland, submandibular glad, sublingual gland, and adipose
What is the integument of the cheeks? the skin on the outside of the cheeks
What is the mucous membrane of the cheeks? the inside covering of the cheeks you can feel with your tongue
What is the duct of parotid salivary gland? the largest salivary gland, dumps saliva posteriorly (around second molar)
What is the submandibular gland? the second largest gland, under the mandible
What is the sublingual gland? under the tongue, the smallest gland
What is the adipose of the cheeks? makes the cheeks puffy, large in infants to protect muscles while sucking
What is another name for adipose of the cheeks? buccal fat pack
What is the orbicularis muscle? paired, superior and inferior, sphincter like muscle around the lips
What is the function of the orbicularis Oris? helps pucker and close the lips (drinking from a straw, saying /p/, whistling
What is the location of the buccinator muscle? deep to risorius muscle, originates from mandibular Raphe, inserts into upper and lower orbicularis oris
What is the function of the buccinator muscle? helps keep food in mouth, brings checks inward, lips against teeth and cheeks against teeth, compresses inward
What is another name for the corners of the mouth? the modiolus
What is the location of the risorius muscle? superficial to buccinator, originates from fascial sheath covering the masseter and inserts into the modiolus
What is the function of the risorius muscle? draws the corners of the mouth laterally and posteriorly
What muscle is a direct synergist to the buccinator? the risorius muscle
What is the location of the Levator labii superioris? the zygomatic bone, maxilla, and under the eye, inserts into the orbicularis oris, has three heads
What is the function of the levator labii superioris? principle elevator of the upper lip
What are the three heads of the levator labii superioris? the angular, infraorbital, and zygomatic heads
What is the location of the zygomatic major? arises from the zygomatic bone and inserts into the modiolus
What is the function of the zygomatic major? primary smiling muscle, draws mouth superior and lateral
What muscle makes dimples by splitting into two sections? the zygomatic major
What is the location of the depressor labii inferioris? originates from the oblique Line of the mandible and inserts into the lower lip
What is the function of the depressor labii inferioris? draws the lower lip inferiorly, helps with pouting and frown
What muscles work to make a sad face? depressors
What muscles work to make a happy face? Levators
What is the function of the levator anguli Oris? pulls the corner of the mouth upward (helps with smile, smirk, and Elvis face)
What is the course of the levator anguli Oris? originates from canine fossa on maxillae and inserts into the upper and lower lips
What is the function of the depressor Anguli Oris? lowers the corner of mouth
What is the course of the depressor Anguli Oris? arises from the oblique Line of the mandible and inserts into the modiolus of the upper and lower lips
What is the function of the mentalis muscle? rolls lower lip outward, helps with puckers and wrinkling chin skin
What is the course of the mentalis muscle? arises from the mandible and inserts into skin of chin below
What type of muscle is the platysma a muscle of the neck, but helps function as mandibular depressor
What is the function of the platysma Can depress mandible or draw lips laterally
What is the course of the platysma? arises from pectoral region of sternocleidomastoid and inserts in lower portion of mandible and deep surface of skin
