QuestionAnswer
What is an audiogram? A graphic representation of pure tone thersholds
Why do audiologists test from 250 Hz to 8000 Hz? Because that comprises the range of speech frequencies within the brain
What could happen if you play a tone too loud? You could hurt them
What is a threshold? the lowest level a patient can hear around 50% of the time
What frequency are vowels? low frequency sounds
What frequency are voiceless fricatives? high frequency sounds
Who chose to flip the audiogram? Harvey Fletcher
What is ear canal resonance? Our ear canal was made to amplify high frequency sounds
When can ear canal resonance be a bad thing? When it is amplifying already high level sounds
What are harmonics? the overtones heard above or below a fundamental frequency
What shape marks the left ear on an audiogram? X
What shape marks the right ear on an audiogram? O
What does a graph look like for early noise-induced hearing loss? a big dip in the graph's line under 20-25 dB HL
What is a noise notch? the dip on an audiogram
What does ear canal resonance do when someone is exposed to high level sounds (aircraft, loud music, etc)? It focuses the damage in the frequency region
What frequency is amplified better by a smaller ear canal? higher frequencies
What frequency is amplified better by a larger ear canal? lower frequencies
What does profound noise induced hearing loss look like on an audiogram? higher left side, then massive drop off on the right side of the graph
Which speech sounds are audible on an audiogram? sounds below the threshold line
Which speech sounds are inaudible on an audiogram? sounds above the threshold line
What are the ling 5 sounds? "ah, oo, ee, sh, s"
What do the ling 5 sounds do? encompass all the range of frequencies of speech
Where is part of the ear canal, middle ear, and inner ear located? within the temporal bone
How many major bones does the human skull have? twenty two
How much does an adult head weigh? 8-12 lbs
How much does the skull (without the brain, blood, skin, fat, etc.) weigh? around 2.2 lbs
What are the general dimensions of the skull? 8" x 8" x 8"
What does the temporal bone from? the sides and base of the skull
How many divisions and articulations does the temporal bone have with the skull? four each
What does the term central mean? related to the brain
What does the term peripheral mean? related to structures which are distal to the brain
Where is the occipital bone in terms of the temporal bone? posterior, at the skull base
Where is the parietal bone in terms of the temporal bone? superior and posterior
Where is the sphenoid bone in terms of the temporal bone? anterior and medial
