Physiology Wk 1-6

QuestionAnswer
What is physiology? The study of how the body’s structures function to maintain life.
What is homeostasis? The process by which the body maintains a stable internal environment despite changes in the external environment.
What is negative feedback? A control mechanism where a change triggers a response that reverses the original stimulus to maintain balance.
What is positive feedback? A mechanism where a change causes responses that amplify the original stimulus.
What is the function of the plasma membrane? It regulates what enters and leaves the cell, maintaining the internal environment.
What is the difference between diffusion and osmosis? Diffusion is the movement of molecules from high to low concentration; osmosis is the movement of water across a semipermeable membrane.
What are the main components of a feedback system? Receptor, control center, and effector.
What is the resting membrane potential? The electrical charge difference across a cell membrane when the cell is at rest, usually around -70 mV.
How do enzymes speed up chemical reactions? By lowering the activation energy required for reactions to occur.
What is ATP and why is it important? Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the main energy currency of the cell, providing power for cellular processes.
