QuestionAnswer
What is physiology? Physiology is the study of the functions of living organisms and their parts, focusing on how body structures work to sustain life.
What is homeostasis? Homeostasis is the body’s ability to maintain a stable internal environment despite external changes, often through feedback mechanisms.
How does a negative feedback mechanism maintain homeostasis? Negative feedback opposes a change in a controlled condition, such as lowering body temperature after a fever, restoring balance.
What is the main function of the plasma membrane? It regulates the movement of substances into and out of the cell, maintaining internal cellular balance.
How do enzymes affect chemical reactions in the body? Enzymes act as biological catalysts that speed up chemical reactions without being consumed in the process.
What happens during muscle contraction at the cellular level? : Calcium ions bind to troponin, causing tropomyosin to shift and expose actin’s binding sites so myosin can form cross-bridges for contraction.
What is the function of the respiratory system in terms of physiology? It supplies oxygen to the blood and removes carbon dioxide through gas exchange in the alveoli of the lungs.
How does the heart maintain blood circulation? The heart acts as a double pump — the right side sends deoxygenated blood to the lungs, and the left side sends oxygenated blood to the body.
What is the primary function of the kidneys? The kidneys filter the blood, remove waste, regulate electrolyte balance, and help maintain fluid homeostasis.
How do hormones regulate body functions? Hormones act as chemical messengers released by endocrine glands that control processes like metabolism, growth, and reproduction
