Computer Basics
| Term | Definition |

| Application | Another word for a program or software. |
| Browser | A program used to go on the internet, such as Google Chrome, Safari, or Microsoft Edge. |
| Cache | Temporary memory that stores data from websites you visit so they load faster the next time. |
| Central Processing Unit (CPU) | It carries out instructions to operate the computer. |
| Click and Drag | Used to highlight text and move programs on the desktop. |
| Clicking | Pointing to something on the screen and then pushing the button on the mouse is called clicking. |
| Computer | An electronic device used for processing data. |
| Cursor | The line or arrow that you control by moving the mouse. |
| Desktop | The screen you see first when your computer turns on. This screen has many icons. |
| Dialogue Box | A window that opens and asks you questions. |
| Disk Drive | A mechanism that spins, reads, and writes disks. |
| Document | Anything you create in Microsoft Word is called a document. |
| Double-click | Used to open files, folders, and programs. |
| Download | To copy a file from the internet or another computer onto your own computer. |
| File | A piece of computer information such as a document or part of a computer program. |
| Folder | Like a file folder in a filing cabinet, a file is where documents (letters, spreadsheets, etc.) are kept. |
| Font | The style and size of letters and numbers when you type. Examples |
| Gigabyte | A unit for measuring digital storage. One gigabyte (GB) can hold about 1,000 photos or a short movie. |
| Hacker | Someone who breaks into computers or networks without permission. |
| Hardware | The physical parts of the computer system that |
| Highlight/Selecting | Click and drag across a word or sentence to highlight it. When it is highlighted you can make changes to it. |
| Icon | Symbols or pictures that you can click on to perform an action. Each program has its own icon. |
| Input | The data that is entered into a computer. Examples of devices are a keyboard, mouse, touch screen, and scanner. |
| Internet | A large network that connects millions of computers and lets people share information around the world. |
| Keyboard | A computer input device that uses a set of keys to put data into the computer. |
| Left-click | Used to perform many computer actions like selecting an item or placing the cursor. |
| Maximize | To expand a window to the full size of the screen. |
| Memory (RAM) / Hard Drive | Where a computer stores information. |
| Microsoft PowerPoint | A software program for making slideshow presentations. |
| Microsoft Word | A word-processing program for typing letters, resumes, school papers and more. |
| Minimize | To move a window to the bottom of the screen without closing the window. |
| Monitor | Sits on the desk and displays what is running on the computer. |
| Motherboard | Provides the means of connecting all the components of a computer. |
| Mouse | A hand-held device used to move the cursor and click on things on the screen. |
| Output | The computer-generated information that is displayed. Examples of devices are monitor, printer, speakers, and projector. |
| Password | A secret word or code used to keep your computer or account safe. You should never share it with others. |
| Personal Computer (PC) | A computer that serves one user at a time. |
| Printer | A device that makes a paper copy of what’s on your computer screen. |
| Programs | Another word for software or applications. |
| Restore | To make a window smaller so that you can change the size or position. |
| Right-click | Will open a menu that gives different options like open, save, print, cut, copy, paste, etc. The menu will be different depending on the program it is used in. |
| Screen | The part of the computer where you can see text, pictures, videos, and other information. |
| Scroll | To move up and down (or side to side) on a page or screen to see more information. |
| Search | To look for information on your computer or the internet by typing in keywords. |
| Server | Designed to support a computer network that allows user to share data, software and peripherals. |
| Software | Computer program that gives a detailed set of instructions to tell the computer exactly what to do. |
| Speaker | A device that lets you hear sounds from the computer, like music, videos, or alerts. |
| Spreadsheet | Organizes information into rows and columns and often uses math and numbers. |
| Taskbar | The bottom bar that shows which programs are open; you can place the mouse over the icons to see multiple windows. |
| Upload | To move a file from your computer to the internet or another device. |
| URL (Uniform Resource Locator) | The address to a file on a Web server. |
| Username | A name or ID that you use to log into a computer or website. It helps identify you as a user. |
| Virus | A harmful program that can spread between computers and cause problems or delete files. |
| Word Processing | Typing documents on a computer. Word processing also allows you to format, save, and edit your writing. |
