TermDefinition
value The lightness or darkness of a color or tone.
value scale A range from light to dark used to show the gradual change in value.
tint A color mixed with white
shade A color mixed with black
tone A color mixed with gray
highlight The lightest area where light hits an object directly.
shadow The darker areas where light is blocked or less direct.
light source The direction from which light originates in an artwork.
color The way we perceive reflected light
primary colors Red, Blue, Yellow – cannot be made by mixing other colors.
tertiary colors Made by mixing a primary color with a neighboring secondary color
mixing colors Combining colors to create new ones
tint Color + white
shade Color + black
tone Color + gray
analogous colors Colors next to each other on the color wheel ( Create harmony and are often used in calm or unified compositions.)
complementary colors Opposite each other on the color wheel (High contrast and vibrant when used side-by-side.)
warm colors Red, Orange, Yellow – feel energetic and inviting.
cool colors Blue, Green, Purple – feel calm and soothing.
neutral colors Black, white, gray, brown – not found on the color wheel.
texture The surface quality of an object – how it feels or appears to feel.
actual texture Texture that can be physically felt
implied texture A visual illusion of texture
collage An artwork made by assembling different materials onto different surfaces.
pen and ink techniques used to create value and texture
hatching Closely spaced parallel lines.
cross hatching Overlapping sets of hatching lines at angles.
stippling Many tiny dots to create value and shading.
contour hatching Hatching that follows the shape of an object.
scumbling Small, scribbled or looping marks.
scribble Random, free-form lines to build up texture or tone.
secondary colors Orange, Green, Purple – made by mixing two primary colors.
