When should refrigerated urine be tested? Within 6-8 hours
What are some tests that can be done with urine specimen? Urinalysis, Urine cultures, clearance tests
What equipment can be used in a urine collection? - sterile/non-sterile cup - cleaning wipes - preservative vacutainer tubes - 24 hour urine container
What is the purpose of transport media for swab collections? They prevent the bacteria from dying in transit (it stays moist)
At what temperature are swab specimens typically transported? Room temperature
Throat cultures, vaginal/urethral cultures, and wound cultures are performed using what type of specimen? Swab specimen
What type of swab would be used for deep wounds? Anaerobic swabs
What type of swab would be used for throat cultures? 2 sterile swabs; one for rapid testing, the other for microbe culture

Why are stool specimen refrigerated? To maintain stability
What are some common test conducted with fecal specimen? - Occult (hidden) blood - stool culture - stool for WBCs - examination of ova and parasite presence
