Terms from our Computer Basics/Keyboarding Unit

TermDefinition
All In One Computer All of the components of the computer case are built into the monitor of this computer.
Audio Port Headphones plug into this.
Central Processing Unit (CPU) Often called the "brain" of the computer. It that carries out commands.
Charging Cord Charges the battery of a laptop computer.
Chromebook A type of laptop that runs Chrome OS
Computer Case The metal and plastic box that contains the main components of the computer
Desktop Computer Designed to be placed on a desk or table, and usually made up of a monitor, computer case, mouse and keyboard.
Ethernet Cable Connects a computer to the internet without WIFI
F&J Keys These keys have bumps on them to help you find the home row.
Hard Drive Where software, documents and files are stored on a computer. This is long-term storage.
Hardware Any part of your computer that has a physical structure, such as the keyboard or mouse.
Home Row The set of keys on a keyboard that are used as a base position for your fingers when typing; a s d f and j k l ;
Laptop Battery powered computer that is portable.
Monitor Works with the video card to display images and text on the screen.
Mouse Allows you to click, point, and move items on the screen. It plugs into the USB port on a desktop computer.
Operating System The most important software on a computer. Windows, Chrome OS, and MacOS are examples.
Power Socket The power cord on a desktop computer plugs into this.
QWERTY The type of keyboard that we use.
RAM (Random Access Memory) The computer's short term memory
Screen An LED or LCD display that is housed in the monitor.
Server A type of computer that serves up information to other computers or is used to store and share files.
Software Any set of instructions that tells the hardware what to do and how to do it. The programs used on a computer like Google Docs, Microsoft Word, email.
Space Bar This key is hit by one of our thumbs.
Touch Pad A touch sensitive pad on a laptop that lets you control the pointer with the drawing motion of your finger.
Touch Typing The skill of typing while using all of one's fingers without looking at the keys.
USB Port A mouse or keyboard plugs into this.
Wifi How your chromebook connects to the internet at school.
