ETHICS AND PROFESSIONALISM - EXAM 1

Define "Ethics" a set of concepts that are determined by morality and dictate the decisions that follow
Ethics can be referred to as the discipline between what is good and bad, and moral duty and obligation
How can Ethics coincide with Law? Even if your ethics consider an action in good faith, if it does not abide by general (or judicial) law, consequences can be served (eg. euthanasia is not legal in all states, but putting someone out of their misery can be deemed as a form of saving)
Define "Law" standards of functioning that depend on the environment; offers consequence(s) if not followed
What is the purpose of the Code of Ethics? they act as a comprehensive list of values that outlines the importance of quality service, integrity, member competence, etc. they serve as the basis for a profession's service orientation principles
According to the ASCLS, who is the Ethical Duty directed to serve? patients, colleagues, society as a whole, the profession
Summarize the Ethical Duty to Patient ensure patient privacy, maintaining confidentiality of PHI, don't stan idle when improper/illegal practices occur, and be competent at your job
Summarize the Ethical Duty to Colleagues/Profession maintain high patient care standard via cooperation and being respectful to our co-workers
Summarize the Ethical Duty to Society contribute to community health and be the standard of care for the care you want to see
How can professionalism be described? believing in the ethics of the general professional sphere
What are some examples of Professionalism Characteristics? exceptional behavioral self-control, considered experts in their field, performance is fueled by the public interest, overseen by code of ethics, high psychomotor knowledge
Compences in Professionalism include - problem solving - continues to develop their skills - can learn and apply new information - committed to their audience - has a great grasp on theoretical knowledge
What are expectations of Professionals? - act as if you're the face of the profession (what do we do, what are we?) - build client relationships without self-interest
