What is the primary function of the autonomic nervous system? to regulate involuntary functions such as heart rate, digestion, respiratory rate, and reflexes
What are the two main divisions of the autonomic nervous system? sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system
what does the hypothalamus regulate in relation to the autonomic nervous system? body temperature, hunger, thirst, fatigue, and circadian rhythms
Which part of the brain controls the voluntary muscle movements? the primary motor cortex, located in the frontal lobe
What is the function of the blood-brain barrier? protects the brain from harmful substances and pathogens in the bloodstream, while allowing essential nutrients to pass through
What role do T cells play in the immune response? they are involoved in cell-mediated immunity, directly attacking infected or cancerous cells and coordinating the immune response.
What is the function of the nephron in the kidney? filters blood, reabsorbs water and solutes, and secretes waste products into the urine, helping maintain homeostasis.
What is the role of the alveoli in the lungs? alveoli are tiny air sacs where gas exchange occurs, this allows oxygen to enter the blood and carbon dioxide to be expelled from the blood.
What is the function of the lymphatic system? helps maintain fluid balance, absorbs dietary fats, and defends the body against infection.
What is difference between red and white blood cells? red blood cells carry oxygen to tissues and remove carbondioxide, while white blood cells are involved in immune defense, protecting the body against pathogens
What is the primary function of the sympathetic nervous system? prepares the body for "fight or flight" responses by increasing heart rate, dialating pupils, and redirecting blood flow to muscles
What is the role of the pancreas in digestion? produces digestive enzymes and bicarbonate, which help digest food in the small intestine and neutralize stomach acids.
What are the main components of the cardiovascular system? the heart, blood, and blood vessels which work together to transport oxygen, nutrients, and waste products throughout the body.
What is the function of the pituitary gland in endocrine regulation? secretes hormones that regulate other endocrine glands, controlling functions such as growth, reproduction, and metabolism.
