acetylcholine (ACh) type of neurotransmitter used by motor neurons at neuromuscular junctions to stimulate muscle contraction at or in some autonomic synapses
hyperpolarization increase in electrical charges separated by the cell membrane; causes change further below 0 mV
repolarization phase of the action potential in which the membrane potential changes from its maximum degree of depolarization toward the resting state potential
cerebellum second largest part of the human brain; plays an essential role in the production of normal movements
cerebrum largest and upper-most part of the human brain that controls consciousness, memory, sensations, emotions, and voluntary movements
epithalamus small nuclei located outside the thalamus and hypothalamus; considered to be one of the structures of the diencephalon
hypothalamus important autonomic and neuroendocrine control center located inferior to the thalamus in the brain
midbrain region of the brain-stem between the pons and the diencephalon
brachial plexus nerve plexus located deep in the shoulder that innervates the lower part of the shoulder and the entire arm
cervical plexus plexus located deep within the neck; innervates muscles and skin of the neck, upper shoulder, and part of the head
sacral plexus plexus formed by fibers from the fourth and fifth lumbar nerves and the first four sacral nerves
vagus nerve cranial nerve X; mixed nerve; sensations and movements of organs
olfactory nerve cranial nerve I; sensory nerve; responsible for the sense of smell
adrenergic adjective describing a structure that functions with norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (Epi), as in a nerve fiber that releases NE or a receptor triggered by NE
cholinergic adjective describing a structure that functions with acetyl-choline (ACh), as a nerve fiber that releases ACh or a receptor triggered by ACh
ganglion in peripheral nerves, a region of gray matter made up of unmyelinated fibers
norepinephrine hormone secreted by adrenal medulla that increases cardiac output; neurotransmitter released by sympathetic postganglionic neurons of the ANS; also called noradrenaline
thermoreceptor sensory receptor activated by heat or cold
