Axial skeleton Contains the skull, vertebral column, and thoracic cage—supports and protects vital organs.
Appendicular skeleton Consists of the limbs (upper and lower) and girdles—facilitates movement
Osteocyte A mature bone cell embedded within lacunae; maintains bone matrix
Sarcomere The structural and functional unit of muscle contraction within a myofibril
Action potential A rapid rise and fall in membrane potential that propagates along a neuron
Hormone Chemical messenger released into the bloodstream by endocrine glands to regulate body functions
Hemoglobin Oxygen‑carrying protein in red blood cells; binds oxygen in lungs and releases it in tissues
Alveoli Tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs between air and blood.
Nephron The functional unit of the kidney, responsible for filtration, reabsorption, and secretion.
Villi Finger‑like projections in the small intestine that increase surface area for nutrient absorption.
