QuestionAnswer
What is the basic function of a neuron? To transmit electrical and chemical signals throughout the body.
What is an action potential? A rapid electrical signal that travels down the axon of a neuron.
What triggers an action potential? A stimulus strong enough to cause depolarization, reaching the threshold potential.
What is depolarization? When sodium (Na⁺) ions rush into the neuron, making the inside more positive.
What is repolarization? The return of the neuron to its resting state, usually by potassium (K⁺) ions flowing out.
What does the Central Nervous System (CNS) consist of? The brain and spinal cord.
What is the main function of the CNS? To process and coordinate sensory information and issue instructions.
What does the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) include? All nerves outside the CNS, including cranial and spinal nerves.
What are the two main divisions of the PNS? The somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system.
What is the endocrine system? A system of glands that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream to regulate body functions.
What is a hormone? A chemical messenger secreted by endocrine glands that affects target organs or tissues.
What are endocrine glands? Ductless glands that release hormones directly into the blood.
