Business law criminal law and procedures

| intent | the mental state or design with which an act is committed |
| assault | an intentional act that causes another person to apprehend an immediate and harmful or offensive contact |
| misdemeanor | a less serious crime, typically punishable by a fine or a brief period of incarceration in a local jail |
| felony | a serious crime, typically punishable by imprisonment for more than a year or by death |
| jurisdiction | the official power to make legal decisions and judgments |
| arraignment | a criminal proceeding at which the defendant is officially called before a court, informed of the offense charged in the complaint or indictment, and asked to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty |
| bail | the temporary release of an accused person awaiting trial, sometimes on condition that a sum of money be lodged to guarantee their appearance in court |
| warrant | a legal paper, issued by a judge, authorizing the police to make an arrest, search, or seize property |
| indictment | a formal accusation by a grand jury that there is enough evidence for a criminal prosecution |
| prosecutor | a legal representative of the prosecution in states and federal courts |
| defense attorney | a lawyer representing a defendant in a lawsuit or criminal prosecution |
| plea bargain | an agreement between a defendant and a prosecutor, in which the defendant agrees to plead guilty or no contest in exchange for an agreement by the prosecutor to drop one or more charges, reduce a charge, or recommend a specific sentence |
| probation | the release of an offender from detention, subject to a period of good behavior under supervision |
| parole | the release of a prisoner temporarily or permanently before the completion of a sentence, on the promise of good behavior |
| habeas corpus | a writ requiring a person under arrest to be brought before a judge or into court, especially to secure the person's release unless lawful grounds are shown for their detention |
