| Term | Definition |

| Homeostasis | relative constancy of the normal body’s internal environment |
| Positive Feedback | feedback control system that is stimulatory; tends to amplify or reinforce a change in the internal environment |
| Negative Feedback | feedback control system in which the level of a variable is changed in the direction opposite to that of the initial stimulus |
| Glucose | monosaccharide, or simple sugar; principal blood sugar used by cells |
| Carbohydrate | organic compounds containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen in certain specific proportions |
| Enzyme | biochemical catalyst that allows chemical reactions to take place |
| Osmosis | passive movement of water through a semipermeable membrane from an area of lesser solute concentration to an area of greater concentration due to an imbalance of impermeant solutes across the membrane |
| Stratum Basale | deepest layer of the epidermis; cells in this layer are able to reproduce themselves |
| Myosin | contractile protein found in the thick filaments of skeletal muscle myofilaments |
