Physiology Stack 1

Weeks 1-6

What is Homeostasis Homeostasis is the maintenance of a stable internal environment within the body, essential for normal body function and survival
Name the four major biomolecules essential for life. Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.
What is the function of ribosomes in a cell? Ribosomes are responsible for synthesizing proteins by translating messenger RNA mRNA into amino acid chains.
Define epithelial tissue Epithelial tissue covers body surfaces, lines cavities, and forms glands, serving protective, secretory, and absorptive functions.
What is the role of osteoblasts? Osteoblasts are bone-forming cells responsible for synthesizing and mineralizing bone matrix.
What is the function of synovial fluid? Synovial fluid lubricates joints, reducing friction and providing nutrients to cartilage.
What is the sliding filament model of muscle contraction? It describes how muscle fibers contract by the sliding of actin and myosin filaments past each other, shortening the sarcomere.
What is the role of the sarcoplasmic reticulum in muscle contraction? The sarcoplasmic reticulum stores and releases calcium ions, which are crucial for initiating muscle contraction.
What is a motor unit, and why is it important in muscle function? A motor unit consists of a single motor neuron and all the muscle fibers it controls. It’s important because it determines the precision and strength of muscle contractions.
What are the main characteristics of cardiac muscle tissue? Cardiac muscle is striated, involuntary, branched, and contains intercalated discs that allow coordinated, rhythmic contractions of the heart.
What is the difference between red and white muscle fibers? Red fibers are slow-twitch, fatigue-resistant, and rich in mitochondria; white fibers are fast-twitch, fatigue-prone, and adapted for rapid, powerful contractions.
What is the function of the intercalated discs in cardiac muscle? Intercalated discs allow for synchronized contraction of cardiac muscle by facilitating rapid transmission of action potentials between cells.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
