| What is an Official Strike | An official strike happens when the trade union holds a secret vote with its members. If most workers agree, the trade union will give the employer one week’s notice of when the strike will start. |
| What is an Unofficial strike | An unofficial strike happens when the employees go on strike without holding a vote. An unofficial strike therefore does not take the views of all the employees into account. |
| What is Work to Rule | This type of strike is also known as a ‘go-slow’ strike. Employees come to work as normal but refuse to do any work other than the basic duties in their contract of employment. This might mean not working overtime or not answering the phone. |

| What is the WRC | The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) was set up to help employers and employees to settle disputes that may arise between them. The WRC provides a trained person to bring both sides together to discuss the problem and share their story and solve it |
| What is the Labour Court | The Labour Court will try to find a solution to a dispute that the WRC were unable to resolve. They listen to both sides and then make a decision about what they think should happen. This process is known as arbitration. |
