What are the four major fuctions of a computer system (any size, and brand, old or new) input, processing, output, store
Define a bit A bit is a binary digit. Bits are series of 0s and 1s. 0 stands for off pulse and 1 stands for on pulse.
Define a byte A byte is a set of 8 bits. Here is an example of 8 bits: 00011111 Every character that we know of (e.g. Z, ?, 3, l) is represented by a series of 8 bits.
How many bytes are in a kilobyte, megabyte, gibabyte, terabyte, petabyte, exabyte these are approximations: kilobyte = 1000 bytes, megabyte = million bytes, gigabyte = billion bytes, terabyte = trillion bytes, petabyte = quadrillion bytes, exabyte = quintillion
On a brand new computer the typical storage size in bytes of a hard drive is in terabytes
Define hardware and give examples any physical component of a computer (mouse, monitor, system unit, mouse)
Define the two main categories of software and give examples of each category system software (operating system, Windows ) and applications software: Microsoft Office Professional 2010, QuickBooks 2010, Turbo Tax, Crystal Reports
What is an example of a peripheral device any device connected to a computer such as mouse, printer, keyboard
Give examples of input devices mouse, keyboard, LCD monitor, touchscreen monitor, digital pen, camcorders, cell phones that capture images, webcam, microphone, voice recognition
Give examples of output devices CRT monitor, LCD monitor, printers, speaker
Define a pixel? picture element--a monitor's resolution is an important factor. A monitor with a resolution of 1680 x 1050 pixels means 1680 columns of pixels by 1050 rows of pixels
Define a motherboard and where it is located A motherboard is a circuit board inside a computer. The motherboard is located in the system unit of a computer; it contains chipsets, expansion slots, and power.
Define CPU. Define a typical speed of a CPU in a desktop computer. Define a popular Intel CPU sold in computers today. A CPU is a central processing unit. A popular Intel CPU for a desktop is Core 2 Duo with a speed of 3.33 GHz
Define RAM. What would be the typical amount of RAM on a desktop computer? RAM stands for Random Access Memory. It is volatile memory. When you start your computer, the operating system is copied into RAM. A program you lauch is copied into RAM. You should have at least 4GM of RAM.
Define ROM Read only memory
How fast is a 3.5 GigaHertz computer. The processor performs work at a rate of 3.5 billion machine cycles per second.
List examples of storage devices or locations hard drive, external backup drive, online storage, CD, DVD, thumb drive, blu-ray disc
What is the most common port type to connect input and output devices to a computer USB port (universal serial bus) 2.0 is the standard; keyboards, printer, mouse, external hard drive, thumb drives can be connected to a USB port
What is a warm boot restarting the computer while it is powered on
Define ergonomics science of designing and arranging things people use so that the people and things interact efficiently and safely.
