Computer Terms Associated with Outer Hardware

Hardware Refers to the physical parts of a computer system
Peripherals External hardware devices

Input Device any device that helps put information into a computer for processing
Common input devices (peripherals) keyboard and mouse

Output data generated from a computer
Output Device Device that outputs information from the computer
Two common output devices that provide instant feedback monitors, speakers
Examples of Output Peripherals (Devices) monitors, speakers, printers, headphones, projectors
Storage Device any type of hardware that stores data
Hard Drive most common type of storage device; C: drive on most computers
Flash Drives and iPod Popular for storing data in small, mobile format
CD-ROM "Compact Disc Read Only Memory" data stored cannot be altered or erased
Floppy Disk Flexible disk with protective casing; disk coated with iron oxide which stores data magnetically
CD-R "Compact Disc Recordable" Data recorded is permanent, cannot be altered or erased
CD-RW "Compact Disc Rewritable" Data recorded cannot be altered but can be erased.
