Figurative Language Definitions
| Term | Definition |

| Personification | Gives an object human characteristics (e.g. The storm clouds angrily gathered overhead.) |
| Oxymoron | combines contradictory words with opposite meanings, (e.g. deafening silence, seriously funny, bittersweet, original copy) used to create emphasis, irony, humour, or for dramatic effect |
| Metaphors | implies a comparison by saying one thing is another (e.g. "Her bedroom is a pigsty!" or "Their striker is a machine." |
| Hyperbole | exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally (e.g. "I'm so hungry, I could eat a horse." "I have a ton of homework to do tonight") |
| Simile | Uses 'like' or 'as' to compare two different things (e.g. He stood as still as a statue.) |
| Onomatopoeia | Words which sound like the action they describe (e.g. pop, crack, buzz, splat, and whizz) |
| Alliteration | words which are next to each other, or close in a sentence and start with the same sound (e.g. whispering wind) |
