| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Membrane Potential | The difference in electrical charge across plasma membranes |
| Local potential | A slight shift away from the resting membrane potential in a specific region of the plasma membrane |
| Stimulus-gated channels | Ion channels that open in response to chemicals produced by a sensory stimulus or by a chemical stimulus received from another neuron. |
| Ligand-gated channels | Stimulus-gated channels that are triggered by ligands, signal molecules that bind to a receptor. |
| Refractory period | A brief period during which a local area of an axon's membrane resists restimulation. |
| Synapse | A place where signals are transmitted from one neuron to another neuron. |
| Electrical synapse | Occur where two cells are joined end to end by gap junctions. |
| Chemical synapse | Uses chemical transmitters (neurotransmitters) to send a signal from the presynaptic cell to the postsynaptic cell |
| Neural networks | Conduct information along complex series of neurons joined together by synapses. |
| Neutrophins | Nerve growth factors that are released by various cells of the body. |
