Motherboard Central printed circuit board that holds the different computer components
Input device Any hardware device used to enter data into a computer system for processing
Output device Any hardware device used to present processed information to users
Hardware Physical components that makes up computer system like the CPU, motherboard, monitor and printer.
Operating system A suite of programs that manage the computer as a whole
Software Applications or programs that a computer system runs
ROM Type of non-volatile memory that holds crucial information such as the boot program
RAM Main memory of a computer that stores data, applications and the operating system whilst in use
Secondary storage Non-volatile method for storing large amounts of data for long term use
FDE Cycle Fetching instructions from memory, decoding them into binary and executing the instruction
General Purpose Computer A Computer with multiple different uses
Purpose Built A computer made for a specific use
Architecture The way in which something is built
Components The devices and parts that make up a computer
Execution To run an instruction or set of instructions
Bit The smallest value of binary i.e. 0 or 1
Byte 255 is the maximum positive integer that can be represented by which binary unit?
Terabyte Binary unit consisting of 1,024 gigabytes
Kilobyte Binary unit consisting of 1,024 bytes
Gigabyte Binary unit consisting of 1,024 megabytes
Operator Part of the instruction that tells the CPU what to do
Artificial Intelligence A computer which can perfrom tasks that humans normally do
Ethical Whether something is right or wrong to do
SENSOR A device that can detect a physical property and records, indicates or responds to it
EMBEDDED SYSTEM A computer system that forms part of an electronic device
OPERATING SYSTEM A suite of programs that manage the computer as a whole
OPEN SOURCE Freely licensed software – the code can be read and modified by anybody
SOFTWARE Applications or programs that a computer system runs
VIRTUAL MEMORY Type of memory that combines your computers RAM with temporary space on your hard disk
FLASH Memory type used by SSDs, USB drives and SD cards (derived from solid-state storage)
SECONDARY STORAGE Non-volatile method for storing large amounts of data for long term use
OPTICAL Category of storage device which involves the use of lasers to read and write data, e.g. CD, DVD
MAGNETIC Category of storage device which includes traditional hard drives and floppy disks
SOLID STATE Category of storage device that does not use any moving parts
CLOCK SPEED This factor determines how many operations a CPU can carry out per unit time

CACHE A small, high-speed type of memory that stores frequently used instructions or data
