| COMPRESSION | The process of reducing the physical size of files, normally for use online |
| ENCRYPTION | The purpose of scrambling data so it can be sent securely over networks |
| INTERNET | A worldwide collection of computer networks |
| ROUTER | Device that forwards data packets to the appropriate parts of a computer network |
| PACKET | Formatted unit of data sent across networks |
| SERVER | Software that provides services to a client, or the hardware that is running it |
| PROTOCOL | The term given to standards that control the communication of network devices |
| STAR NETWORK | Topology that features a central connection point called a 'hub' |
| IP ADDRESS | Unique number assigned to every computer or device connected to the Internet |
| MAC ADDRESS | A unique number permanently assigned to every physical interface on a computer network |
| NETWORK INTERFACE CARD | Circuit board installed into a computer to allow it to connect to networks |
| IP ADDRESS | Unique number assigned to every computer or device connected to the Internet |
| WEB BROWSER | An application used to browse the web |
| SEARCH ENGINE | An application used to search the index of the WWW |
| WWW | World Wide Web, a collection of web pages stored on the internet |
| E-SAFETY | Being safe online |
| ONLINE FOOTPRINT | The trail you leave behind of posts, shared posts and shared pictures. |
| WEB CRAWLER | A bot that crawls the web making an index of the findings |
| INTERNET SERVICE | Something you can do online such as communication |
| COMMERCE | Buying and selling goods and services |
| VOIP | Voice over IP, communication online via video and audio |
| HTML | The main markup language used for displaying web pages in a browser |
| Bandwidth | The amount of data that can be transmitted across a network e.g. 60mbps |
| Network | One or more computers connected together |
