| meninges | fluid-containing membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord |
| somatic nervous system | motor neurons that control voluntary actions of skeletal muscles |
| autonomic nervous system | division of the nervous system that monitors and regulates subconscious (involuntary) functions |
| neuroendocrine system | endocrine and nervous systems working in concert to perform communication, integration, and control within the body |
| steroid hormone | lipid-soluble hormone that passes intact through the cell membrane of the target cell and influences cell activity by acting on specific genes |
| pituitary gland | neuroendocrine gland located near base of the brain that has numerous and important regulatory functions; also called the hypophysis |
| thyroid gland | endocrine gland located in the neck that stores its hormones until needed; thyroid hormones regulate cellular metabolism |
| parathyroid gland | endocrine gland located in the neck on the posterior aspect of the thyroid gland; secretes parathyroid hormone |
| adrenal gland | endocrine gland that rests on the top of each kidney; made up of cortex and medulla region |
| platelet | flattened cell fragment found in the blood that functions in hemostasis; thrombocyte |
| hemostasis | stoppage of blood flow |
| arteries | vessel carrying blood away from the heart |
| capillaries | tiny vessels that connect arterioles and venules; gas exchange from blood to tissues occurs in capillaries |
| veins | vessel carrying blood from capillar-ies toward the heart |
| cardiac output | volume of blood pumped by one ventricle per minute |
| lymphatic vessels | any vessel of a system of blind-ended vessels that collect lymph and deliver it to the circulatory system via the thoracic duct and the right lymphatic duct |
| lymph nodes | small structure that performs biological filtration of lymph on its way to the circulatory system |
| innate immunity | type of immunity that exists prior to exposure to a specific antigen and that can recognize and destroy a variety of harmful agents or conditions; also called nonspecific immunity |
| adaptive immunity | type of immunity in which specific antigens or particles are recognized, then targeted for destruction; also called acquired immunity or specific immunity |
| pulmonary ventilation | breathing; process that moves air in and out of the lungs |
| gastric juice | stomach secretion containing acid and enzymes; aids in the digestion of food |
| pancreatic juice | digestive secretion; secreted by the exocrine acinar cells of the pancreas |
