Propellers O&P

QuestionAnswer
How does a propeller function? as it turns, the curved forward surface causes low pressure which produces thrust, which then moves the aircraft
Why are constant speed propellers used? to obtain max rpm while keeping engine rpm constant
What are the components of a propeller governor and how does it operate? drive gear, oil pump, pilot valve, relief valve, piston, speeder spring, adjusting rack -takes engine oil pressure and increases it to change the pitch of the propeller blades
What is a test club propeller? When and why is it used? four-bladed, fixed pitch propeller, used during ground testing or break-in of a recip engine, designed to put the correct amount of load on an engine
What is the maximum interval between lubrication of a propeller and where does the technician find the proper procedures for lubrication of a particular propeller? every 100 hours or 12 calendar months, manufacturers maintenance manual
How is the angle of a propeller blade measured while the propeller is mounted on the engine? measured at blade stations specified by the manufacturer
In general, what is the procedure for removing a propeller? remove the spinner, cut safety wire, support the prop, mark it, unscrew bolts- always follow manufacturers instructions
What is the function of a typical propeller synchronization system and how does it operate? used to eliminate unpleasant beat (noise), it matches the rpm of both engines to keep cockpit noise down
Explain why ice is a problem for propeller operation. Then, name a means for anti-icing and a means of deicing aircraft propellers. distorts the blade airfoil, anti-ice fluid, electric heating elements
What type of device is used on propeller blades to remove ice that has formed on them? Electrically heated deicer boots.
What is used to prevent ice forming on a propeller blade? A mixture of ethylene glycol and isopropyl alcohol slung out along the blades.
Should an adjustable-pitch propeller be in high pitch or in low pitch for takeoff? In low pitch.
What is done to cause a Hydromatic propeller to feather? High-pressure engine oil is directed into the propeller through the governor.
What is done to cause a McCauley propeller to feather? Oil is allowed to drain out of the propeller.
Does centrifugal twisting moment on a propeller blade tend to move the blades toward high pitch or toward low pitch? Toward low pitch.
Do the flyweights on a propeller tend to move the blades toward high pitch or toward low pitch? Toward high pitch.
What is the difference between a controllable propeller and a constant-speed propeller? the control system
When making a magneto check on an engine equipped with a constant-speed propeller, should the propeller control be in the LOW PITCH or the HIGH PITCH position? LOW PITCH position.
What can be done to prevent the front cone from bottoming when installing a propeller on a splined shaft? Install a spacer behind the rear cone to move the propeller forward on the shaft.
What is the purpose of the small holes that are drilled in the end of a wooden propeller? These holes vent the inside of the propeller blade and allow moisture that collects in the wood to be released.
What is the function of the snap ring inside the hub of a propeller that is mounted on a tapered or splined shaft? allows the propeller to be pulled off of the shaft when the retaining nut is backed off.
What is adjusted inside the governor for a constant-speed propeller to change the speed at which the propeller is operating? The compression of the speeder spring.
What is the function of the accumulator that is used with some McCauley feathering propellers? stores oil under pressure when the engine is operating normally.
What is meant by the beta range of operation of a turboprop propeller? This is the mode of ground operation, and it includes starting, taxiing, and ground reverse operation.
What is meant by the alpha range of operation of a turboprop propeller? This is the in-flight mode of operation from takeoff to landing.
Is the flat surface of a propeller blade the face of the blade or the back of the blade? It is the face of the blade.
What keeps a McCauley feathering propeller from feathering when the engine is shutdown on the ground? A spring-loaded latch mechanism
