What are the two types of digestion? Mechanical and chemical digestion
Where do we start breaking down carbohydrates? In the mouth via amylase in the saliva
What is the purpose of emulsification of fats Fats are insoluble in water. Emulsification increases the surface area, making lipase to digest them easier.
What is the wave-like ripple of the muscle layer of the digestive system? Peristalsis
How do we mechanically digest our food? Mastication
What are the enzymes responsible to chemical digestion? amylase, proteases and lipase
What is the "hunger hormone"? Ghrelin
What does Cholecystokinin (CCK) do? A hormone that responds to fats and proteins and triggers to release digestive enzymes to break them down?
Which organ secrete digestive enzymes into small intestine? Pancreas
Which cells found in the pancreas detect the rise of blood glucose cells? Beta cells within the islets of Langerhans
