What is the setting of the play? Salem, Massachusetts, in the Spring of 1692
How does Parris feel about children? He has no interest in or talent for them.
What “kept the morals of the place from spoiling”? Hard work.
In what “lay the best promise of safety” for the community of Salem? Unity.
According to the text of the play, what is a theocracy? A combine of state and religious power (i.e. legislators & religious leaders were in charge).

Who is Tituba? Where is she from? A slave of Rev. Parris. She is in her forties & from Barbados.
Who is Abigail? Describe her. Abigail is the niece of Rev. Parris; she is 17, beautiful, an orphan, & dishonest.
Who has Parris sent for in order to address the concerns that Betty’s illness may be due to witchcraft? Rev. John Hale of Beverly.
What did Parris catch Abigail and the other girls doing in the woods? Dancing…“like heathens.”
What is Reverend Parris’ primary concern regarding his daughter’s illness? His reputation & security as minister of Salem.
What does Thomas Putnam insist is the cause of Betty’s & Ruth’s illnesses? Witchcraft or the devil’s touch.
How does Thomas Putnam feel towards Rev. Parris? Why? He is bitter towards anyone who holds the position of minister in Salem. Years ago he wanted his wife’s brother-in-law, James Bayley, to get the job, but he was passed over. Putnam felt insulted by this.
How many children has Mrs. Putnam given birth to? What has happened to the majority of them? Eight children; seven died just after birth.
Why did Mrs. Putnam call upon Tituba for help? Mrs. Putnam sent Ruth to Tituba so Tituba could conjure the spirits of her seven babies to find out who or what was responsible for their deaths.
Who is Mercy Lewis? Describe her. Mercy is sly, merciless, dishonest girl of 18; she is the housemaid to the Putnams.
Who is Mary Warren? Describe her. Mary Warren is 17, a subservient, naïve, lonely girl. She is the house-girl/servant of John & Elizabeth Proctor.
What does Mary suggest the girls do concerning the rumours that they’re witches? Mary says they should tell the truth. She did not participate in the “sinful” activities; she only looked.
What did Abigail drink in the forest? Why did she drink it? Chicken blood…a charm to kill Goody Proctor.
What has happened to Abigail in the past that makes her threats to the other girls all the more intimidating? She witnessed Indians crush her parents’ skulls.
Describe John Proctor? What is his relationship to Abigail? A farmer in his mid-30s. He is a rebel in the town, and he is haunted by a secret sin (adultery); he had an affair with Abigail seven months ago.
Describe Rebecca Nurse. How many children & grandchildren does Rebecca Nurse have? She is 72; she highly respected in Salem. She has 11 children & 26 grandchildren
What does Rebecca Nurse say is the reason for Betty’s illness? She’s being a child (scared &; faking)…it’s her “silly season”
Of the following characters--Rev. Parris, John Proctor, Rebecca Nurse, Mr. Putnam--who supports the summons of Rev. Hale and who opposes it? Rev. Parris & Mr. Putnam are for the coming of Rev. Hale….Mr. Proctor & Rebecca Nurse are against it.
Describe Reverend Hale. Rev. Hale is near 40, a tight-skinned, eager-eyed intellectual who believes he is doing God’s work. He is considered to be the expert on identifying the presence of witchcraft and this makes him a bit arrogant.
What does Hale suggest is the reason the devil would strike the family of a minister? Because the devil wants the “best” people and who could be better than the family of a minister.
What does Abigail say “jumped” into the kettle of soup that was in the grass where she and the other girls were dancing? A frog.
Why does Tituba confess to witchcraft? They threatened to beat/whip her and hang her.
What does Tituba say the Devil bade (commanded) her do? Why does she say this? To kill Rev. Parris. This is the way she truly feels, but she could never speak it out loud until now.
What are the girls doing at the close/end of Act One? They are yelling out the names of “supposed” witches; they are (falsely) accusing women of being witches.
