Lube/Cooling O&P

QuestionAnswer
Name two items to be inspected to ensure adequate cooling of a recip aircraft engine. cowling, cowling seals, cowl flaps, cylinder baffles
In what position should cowl flaps be placed for ground operation and why? fully open, they provide the greatest amount of airflow over the engine
How is the combustion section of a turbine engine cooled? using air that has drawn through the compressor which is then routed through the combustion chamber liners
What cools the bearings on a turbine engine? air that has been bled from the compressor section or sometimes air that is drawn in from the outside
What would be the effect of removing the engine baffles and seals from around a recip air-cooled aircraft engine and why? engine would over heat, they are designed to route air around the cylinders
What are two common types of heat exchangers used to cool engine oil on turbine engine aircraft? fuel-oil and air-oil
What is the function and operation of an augmenter cooling system? to draw ambient air through the engine compartment
What is the difference between straight mineral oil, ashless-dispersant oil, and synthetic oil? Mineral- blended from petroleum based stock Ashless- mineral oil with non metallic, non ash forming additives Synthetic- more viscous, lower tendency to deposit lacquer/coke
What types of oils are used for different climates? ashless dispersant
What are the functions of engine oil? acts as a cushion between metal parts and reduces friction
How can the technician identify and select proper lubricants? Engine Manufactures Information
Name two maintenance actions that are part of servicing an aircraft engine lubrication system? periodic oil changes, oil filter change, inspection and cleaning of screens
What is the reason for changing engine oil at specified intervals? overtime oil accumulates gas, moisture, dirt, carbon, and metallic particles, so replacing the oil helps keep the engine clean
What are two reasons for excessive oil consumption on a recip engine that shows no signs of oil leakage? low grade oil, failing crankshaft bearings
