Aircraft Engines O&P

QuestionAnswer
What is the reciprocating engine theory of operation? internal combustion device that converts the energy in fuel into mechanical energy.
What is the basic radial engine design and how does it operate? a recip engine with the cylinders arranged radially around a central crankcase and crankshaft
What is firing order and how is it determined? the sequence in which the power event occurs in different cylinders, set to provide balance and eliminate vibration
Why are valves adjusted on a radial engine? to make sure the valve has enough clearance in the valve train to close completely, they will loosen because of solid lifters
What is the purpose of a master rod and articulating rods? to connect the crankshaft with the piston
What is the purpose, function, and operation of multiple springs on a valve? to prevent vibration and valve surging at certain speeds, especially those of high rpm
What is the propeller reduction gearing and why is it used? used to allow the engine to turn at a high rpm while keeping the prop speed low and efficient
What is the basic theory of operation of a gas turbine engine? air is taken in at the front of the engine and is compressed in the compressor section, from there it is sent through a diffuser to the combustion section where fuel is discharged and combustion takes place.
What are some causes for turbine engine performance losses? damaged or worn components, turbine section not hot enough
What is the purpose of a turbine engine diffuser? reduces the velocity of the compressor discharge air
What type of engine is a typical APU? What is the function and how does it operate? turboshaft, to turn the aircraft generator and provide bleed air
