| homeostasis | “Standing or staying the same,” |
| Afferent | means that a signal is traveling toward a particular center or point of reference, |
| efferent | means that the signal is moving away from a center or other point of reference. |
| four major groups of organic substances | Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, Nucleic acids and related molecules |
| proteins have four elements | carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen. |
| four levels of increasing complexity in protein organization | Primary (first level), Secondary (second level), Tertiary (third level), Quaternary (fourth level) |
| Osmosis | the movement of water through a semipermeable membrane. |
| endocytosis | plasma membrane “traps” some extracellular material and brings it into the cell. |
