QuestionAnswer
Real Culture Actual behavior patterns of members of a group.
Mores Norms that have moral dimensions and that should be followed by members of society.
Ideal culture Cultural guidelines that group members claim to accept.
Cultural universals General cultural traits that exist in all cultures.
Subculture A group that is part of the dominant culture but that differs from it in some important respects.
Counter culture A subculture deliberately and consciously opposed to certain central beliefs or attitudes of the dominant culture.
Taboo A rule of behavior, that violation of which calls for strong punishment.
Instincts Innate (unlearned) patterns of behavior.
Symbols Broad ideas about what is good or desirable shared by people in society
Drive Impulse to reduce discomfort
What is cultural diffusion? What is an example of it? Where cultures spread in other cultures. Mexican restaurants in America
Ethnocentrism. Be able to recognize an example of it, and what is good and bad about it. Judging others in terms of one’s own cultural standards. Ex: Racism or athletic rivalries
What is a folkway? Be able to identify an example Norms that lack moral significance. Sleeping in a bed instead of sleeping on the floor
The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, what is it? What does it say about perception? As you learn new languages you come in thoughts with new words and new thoughts. Chinese people hear the word sin for the first time because they don’t follow Christianity culture in their country.
Be able to recognize a cultural universal. Something that all cultures will have. Ex: Some form of a family structure
Be able to differentiate between material and nonmaterial culture. Material: physical touchable objects of your culture Nonmatieral: values and your beliefs that are not touchable of your culture
Explain Sociobiology and its main criticisms. It can lead to racism claims, more nature less nurture
