QuestionAnswer
an event that gets a story started; For example, a crime that happens at the beginning of a cop show would be known as the... inciting incident
when an author drops hints about what will take place later in the story foreshadowing
a struggle between two opposing forces; four major types of this struggle are man vs. man, man vs. nature, man vs. society, and man vs. himself conflict
the high point of a story, when the readers' questions are answered climax
the time and place in which a story occurs setting
a person (or animal) that has a role--or significant part--in a story character
the way in which an author presents or portrays a character; example: an author making a character seem very wise characterization

the way a character's speech sounds because of where they're from; the phrases and expressions a character from a certain region might use dialect
conversation between two (or more) characters, almost always indicated in a story by the use of quotation marks dialogue
a pause in the action of a story to present a scene or event that happened in the past, before the story even began flashback
an event or occurrence that is the opposite of what one might expect; example: a couple finding a fortune that they believe will save their suffering child only to have that fortune be the cause of the child's death irony
