| Term | Definition |

| Structural lines | The lines that hold a design together. |
| Outline | Generally the outer edge of a silhouette, or the line made by the edges on an object. |
| Contour lines | Describes the shape of an object and includes interior detail. |
| Gesture lines | A continuous flow of line or lines that emphasize direction and fluidity. |
| Sketch lines | The most detail-providing of all, sometimes having a finished appearance and often giving an appearance of depth. |
| Calligraphy | Precise, elegant handwriting or hand-written lettering that oftentimes varies between thick and thin everywhere throughout. |
| Line personality | The general characteristics of a line, used to convey a specific mood or feeling |
| Implied lines | Suggested lines (lines that were not actually drawn) in the artwork. |
| Line of sight | An imaginary line from a figure's eyes to a viewed object. |
