Module 02 vocabulary for Photoshop Course - Project Setup and Layer Fundamentals
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Layers | Individual elements or images stacked on top of each other in Photoshop, allowing for non-destructive editing and easier manipulation of separate parts of a design. |
| Layer Properties | Characteristics and settings that can be adjusted for each layer, such as opacity, fill, and blending mode. |
| Adjustment Layers | Layers that apply color and tonal adjustments to layers beneath them without permanently altering the original image. |
| Layer Masks | A tool that allows for non-destructive editing by concealing or revealing parts of a layer without permanently erasing any pixels. |
| Clipping Masks | A group of layers to which a mask is applied, where the bottom most layer defines the visible boundaries of the entire group. |
| Blending Modes | Settings that determine how a layer's pixels blend with the pixels of the layers beneath it. |
| Smart Objects | Layers that contain image data from raster or vector images, allowing for non-destructive scaling, rotation, and other transformations. |
| Destructive Editing | Editing that permanently alters the original image data, making it impossible to revert to the original state. |
| Non-Destructive Editing | Editing techniques that do not permanently alter the original image data, allowing for adjustments and reversibility. |
| Opacity | The transparency level of a layer, ranging from 0% (completely transparent) to 100% (completely opaque). |
| Photo Collage | A composite image made by combining multiple photos into one cohesive design. |
| Mood Board | A visual representation of a concept or theme, created by combining various images, colors, and text to convey a particular style or feeling. |
| Layer Groups | A collection of layers organized into a folder-like structure that can be managed together while maintaining individual layer properties. |
| Layer Comps | Saved variations of layer visibility and position settings within a document, allowing quick switching between different versions of a design. |
| Fill vs. Opacity | Two different ways to control layer transparency - Fill affects only the layer content while Opacity affects the entire layer including effects. |
| Background Layer | The base layer in a Photoshop document that has special properties - it cannot be moved or have transparency. |
| Layer Lock Options | Various ways to protect layer content from accidental changes, including transparency, position, and complete locks. |
| Color Coding | A system for organizing layers by assigning different colors to layer labels for easy visual identification. |
| Layer Search | A feature that allows finding specific layers by name, type, effect, color, or other attributes. |
| Layer Effects | Non-destructive special effects that can be applied to layers, including shadows, glows, and bevels. |
| Layer Linking | A feature that connects multiple layers so they can be transformed or moved together while remaining separate. |
| Smart Filter | A non-destructive filter applied to a Smart Object that can be modified or removed at any time. |
| Blend If | Advanced blending options that control how layers interact based on the brightness values of the current and underlying layers. |
| Layer Rasterization | The process of converting a Smart Object, text, or shape layer into pixels, making it no longer editable in its original form. |
| Layer Arrangement | The order of layers in the stack that determines their visibility and how they interact with each other. |
| Layer Thumbnails | Small preview images in the Layers panel that show the content of each layer. |
| Vector Masks | Resolution-independent masks created using shapes or paths that can be edited at any time without quality loss. |
| Nested Smart Objects | Smart Objects contained within other Smart Objects, allowing for complex non-destructive editing workflows. |
| Layer Effects Palette | A dialog box containing all available layer effects and their settings, allowing for detailed customization of layer appearances. |
