| Business Communication | Sending and interpreting messages related to products, services, or activities of a company or an organization |
| Careful Reading | Reading to understand and remember the materials |
| Channel | The mode or form used to send a message |
| Communication | The process used to send and interpret messages so they are understood |
| Communication Barriers | Anything that interferes with the communication process |
| Confidential Information | Data that should be kept private or secret |
| Decoding | Translating symbols into an understandable idea, feeling, suggestion, guideline, or order |
| Encoding | The process of taking the idea of the sender and converting it into an effective format so the receiver can clearly understand the message. |
| External Communication Barriers | Condition outside the receiver or the sender that hinder communication |
| Feedback | The response of a receiver to a message |
| Goodwill | A positive feeling or attitude toward others |
| Grapevine | Informal gossip about individuals or policies in the office |
| Internal Communication Barriers | Conditions within a receiver or sender that hinder communication |
| Listening | The process of hearing and focusing attention to understand an oral message |
| Message | A verbal, written, or recorded communication |
| Message Environment | The physical and social setting in which a message is sent or received |
| Noise | Anything that interferes with the accuracy of the communication process |
| Nonverbal Message | An action or condition that expresses a meaning |
| Paraphrasing | A method used to verify your understanding by restarting the main points of a message in your own words |
| Receiver | A person who hears, sees, or read and interpret a message |
| Reading | The process of seeing and interpreting written words and other symbols |
| Scanning | Reviewing materials in an attempt to get a basic understanding of the objectives and the important points of material you are going to read |
| Sender | A person who creates and shares messages |
| Skimming | Looking over material quickly to locate specific data |
| Verbal Message | Messages that are spoken |
