| Scout Finch | The narrator of the novel, she learned to read at a very young age. Her real name is Jean Louise, and she is the younger sister of Jem. |
| Jem Finch | His real name is Jeremy Atticus, the older brother of Scout. He condescends to take his sister to school on her first day. He suffers a broken arm, but he's just fine since he can still play football. |
| Dill Harris | His real name is Charles Baker. He lives in Meridian, Mississippi, but visits his Aunt Rachel Haverford every summer, playing character parts in summer role-playing games. |
| Walter Cunningham, Jr. | A classmate of Scout, he is a poor farm boy from out in the country. He comes from a poor but proud family who always pays what it owes and accepts no charity. He poured molasses all over his lunch when invited to the Finch home. |
| Calpurnia | She is the housekeeper for the Finch family since the death of Jem and Scout's mother. She is responsible for teaching Scout how to write (cursive) and misses Scout when she goes to school for first grade. |
| Miss Maudie Atkinson | A wise woman who gives people the benefit of the doubt and refuses to gossip, she lives across the street from the Finches. She loves to garden and is adept at finding the silver lining in the midst of disaster. |
| Miss Caroline Fisher | Originally from North Alabama, she is Scout's first grade teacher. She introduces a new way of teaching reading and is upset that Scout already knows how to read and write when she comes to school. She boards at Miss Maudie's. |
| John Hale "Jack" Finch | Jack is Atticus's younger brother by 10 years. Atticus helped put him through medical school. He gives the kids BB guns for Christmas and teaches them how to shoot. He chews out Scout for using inappropriate language |
| Arthur "Boo" Radley | The youngest Radley son, he got into legal trouble as a teen. He is a recluse, leading to all kinds of awful rumors floating around. He saves Jem and Scout from a dire situation |
